Fukuyama City

The City of Fukuyama is the fourth largest city in Western Honshu along the northern shore of Seto-Inland Sea. The population is a little less than a half million and the area of city is about five hundreds square kilometers. The climate is temperate and the area enjoys plenty of sunny days year-around. The town was founded in 1619 when the castle was built and the city government was established in 1916. At the end of the World War Second, the eighty percent of city area was destroyed. Today's City of Fukuyama is known as "Town of Roses" nation-wide. The City of Fukuyama is also known for world-class steel plant and ship-yard, scenic and historic sea-side area and a number of unique and modern industries. Traditional industries in the area are wooden foot ware, Japanese harp and textile. The people's activities in traditional Japanese culture such as calligraphy, tea ceremony and Noh bring this City a rich taste of history and culture.
